Our Clean Standards

"Clean" has become one of the most overused words in beauty — and one of the least defined. At Botā, it's a standard, not a slogan. We're a clean living platform, which means we don't make everything we sell; we curate it. Every brand and every formula we bring to you is vetted against the same clean ingredient standards, from clean skincare and clean beauty to bath, baby, and the way you clean your home. This page is where we show our work: how we screen ingredients, what we choose to leave out, and a plain-English guide to the actives worth knowing.

Our Vetting Process

The clean beauty market has a transparency problem. "Natural," "non-toxic," "clean" — these words appear on thousands of labels with no shared definition behind them, and greenwashing has made it genuinely hard to tell a considered formula from a clever one. We built Botā to do that work for you. Nothing reaches our shelves on the strength of a marketing claim. It earns its place by passing through five stages of scrutiny — and most of what we look at never makes it through.

How we vet — five stages

  • 1. Ingredient Screening

Every formula is read in full, ingredient by ingredient, against the Botā restricted and banned list. A single excluded ingredient — a synthetic fragrance, a formaldehyde-releaser, a questionable UV filter — is enough to stop a product here, no matter how beautiful the rest of it is.

  • 2. Sourcing & Transparency

We look at where ingredients come from and whether a brand can actually tell us. We favour partners who disclose their full INCI lists, name their key actives, and can speak to how they're grown, harvested, or produced. If a brand won't be transparent with us, we assume it won't be transparent with you.

  • 3. Efficacy

Clean is the entry requirement, not the whole promise. A product also has to work. We assess each formula on the strength of its actives and the evidence behind them — proven ingredients at meaningful concentrations — because a gentle formula that does nothing isn't doing you any favours.

  • 4. Ethics & Sustainability

We weigh how a product is made and packaged: cruelty-free practices, responsibly sourced botanicals, recyclable, refillable, or reduced packaging, and brands whose values hold up beyond the bottle. This is why our home and refill ranges sit on the same shelf as our serums — clean living doesn't stop at the bathroom door.

  • 5. Final Curation

What survives all four stages goes to a final editorial review. We ask one last question — would we use this ourselves, and give it to the people we love? Only then does it become part of Botā. The result is a deliberately edited selection, not an endless catalogue.

We'd rather offer you fewer products you can trust completely than more you have to second-guess. That's the whole point of Botā.
